The disaster relief efforts of the American Red Cross are continuous throughout the year as hurricanes, tornadoes, wild fires, earthquakes, and other severe weather destroys property across the nation.   At a local level, firefighters respond to a home fire every 8 minutes in the Arkansas Region. When the fire causes severe damage to the home, the American Red Cross is called in to assist the family. The volunteers help with relocation, donate basic day to day living supplies, provide food, and much more.

Since 2014, the Red Cross, in partnership with fire departments and other local groups, has visited homes installing free smoke alarms, replacing batteries in existing alarms and providing fire prevention and safety education to prevent needless tragedies. This program is called the Home Fire Campaign. In the spring of 2017, the Red Cross launched Sound the Alarm, a series of home fire safety and smoke alarm installation events nationwide. Volunteers installed 100,000 free smoke alarms in high risk neighborhoods, culminating the installation of the one millionth smoke alarm!

To learn how you can become involved in the Home Fire Campaign, contact your local Red Cross organization.  Larger cities in Arkansas have local chapters of dedicated volunteers.  To locate the chapter nearest you or to make a donation, visit https://www.redcross.org
